Statement from Our Executive Director
Grand Rapids is one of our homes. We love our Grand Rapids theatre community and our Grand Rapids audiences. Today, our hearts break for the city of Grand Rapids and most especially for the family and friends of Patrick Lyoya, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop on April 4, 2022.
We recognize and empathize with the pain in the Grand Rapids community, and we mourn for the ongoing injustice and violence against Black individuals that continues to occur in communities across the country, and which has roots deep in many of our societal systems.
For our artists and audience members, we offer this thought from Shakespeare: “Thrice is he armed that hath his quarrel just, and he but naked, though locked up in steel, whose conscience with injustice is corrupted.” Let us all examine the ways, large and small, that we can seek to end injustice through our own actions in the world.
